Box Score The Alma College Women's Basketball team traveled to Albion College on Wednesday night and dropped a 68-54 decision to the host Britons. With the loss, the Scots now stand at 5-8 in MIAA action and 6-15 overall, while Albion improved to 5-8 in the league and 8-14 in 2012-13.
"We had a very good first half, came out strong defensively in the second half but went eleven minutes without scoring," said Scots Head Coach Keisha Brown. "In this league you can't have stretches like that and expect to win. We need to come out strong Saturday and finish strong these last three games of the regular season."
A very competitive first half saw both teams play hard in a game that had league playoff ramifications. The game was tied at 8-8 at the 15:33 mark before the Scots went on a 11-2 run to take a 19-10 lead on a three-pointer by So. G Mallory Pruett (Ishpeming, Mich./Ishpeming) with 9:42 left in the half.
Albion would fight back and take a 24-23 lead with 2:38 remaining in the frame but Alma would answer with another mini-run before the end of the half. After another three-pointer by Pruett, the Scots had a 31-27 lead and would go into halftime with that advantage.
The second half began much like the first 20 minutes as the game remained close for the first seven minutes of the frame. Alma led 41-40 with 12:50 left after two free throws by Fr. F Raeanna Zink (Birch Run, Mich./Frankenmuth). However, the Britons took control from that point as they went on a 13-0 run for a 53-41 advantage at the 7:44 mark.
The Britons would achieve their biggest lead of the game at 66-46 with 3:06 remaining in the contest and even though Alma closed out the game on a 8-2 mini-run, the visitors fell short in the end by the 68-54 margin. Albion outscored the Scots 41-23 in the second half en route to the victory.
Pacing the Scots in the loss was Jr. F Bailey Gooding (Gaylord, Mich./Gaylord) who had team-highs with 18 points and nine rebounds. Pruett added 10 points, a team-best six assists and five boards, while Zink finished with 10 points on the evening.
Alma will host Saint Mary's College on Saturday afternoon at Art Smith Arena in the annual Pink Game for Breast Cancer Awareness. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
