Box Score As Saturday's game at Adrian approached, the Alma College Women's Basketball team knew the chances of qualifying for the league playoffs was going to be a challenge. The Scots needed to win on the road against a solid Bulldogs team and also needed a Trine home loss versus Kalamazoo.
Despite a valiant effort, Alma could not live up to their end of the bargain as they dropped a 65-56 decision to the Bulldogs. With the loss, the Scots finished the season 6-10 in the MIAA and 7-17 overall, while Adrian closed out the year at 7-9 in the league and 8-16 in 2012-13.
"It's disappointing we lost this game, but I am not disappointed in our season," remarked Scots Head Coach Keisha Brown. "For us to be in contention for fourth place was an accomplishment for us. Amongst many other things these young ladies have achieved, our seniors have done a lot and laid the foundation. I believe we have positioned ourselves well for a successful next season."
Adrian was steady all afternoon and only allowed Alma to have one lead in the contest, at 4-2 after a jumper by Jr. F Bailey Gooding (Gaylord, Mich./Gaylord) with 18:18 left in the first half. The Bulldogs then went on a 12-2 run to take a 14-6 advantage at the 14:23 mark.
The Scots cut the deficit to 25-23 at 4:16 on a jump shot by Sr. F Danielle Hicks (Marshall, Mich./Marshall) but the Bulldogs would respond. A 9-3 finish to the first frame allowed Adrian to get to the halfway point with the 34-26 lead.
The second half saw Alma fight for 20 minutes but the home team was not going to be denied on this afternoon. The Scots cut it to 36-32 at 16:44 after a basket by Fr. G Kassidi Adams (Montrose, Mich./Montrose) and 47-43 at 9:34 on a lay-up by Gooding.
However, Adrian answered each time and led 55-46 with 5:33 remaining in the game, safely keeping the visitors at bay. The closest Alma would come the rest of the way was six points but the Bulldogs would prevail with the 65-56 final margin of victory.
So. G Grace Wheeler (St. Ignace, Mich./LaSalle) led the Scots with 17 points including three from beyond the arc, while Adams finished with a team-high 10 rebounds and three assists. Hicks contributed seven points and five rebounds in the loss.
