Women's Soccer beats Kzoo 1-0 in regular season final - will host Hope College on Thursday at 2:00 p.m. in MIAA Semi-Finals

Box Score

On a chilly Monday night, the Alma College women's soccer team concluded the 2013 regular season with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over host Kalamazoo College. With the win, the Scots finished in second place with a league mark of 13-3 and are 13-6 overall, while the Hornets ended their season with a final mark of 6-10 in the MIAA and 7-12 in 2013.

The Scots will now host third place Hope College on Thursday afternoon in the MIAA Semi-Finals at Scotland Yard. The match time has yet to be determined.

"I am proud of the girls and the business like approach they took to tonight's match," remarked Alma Head Coach Jeff Hosler. "They could have easily been distracted by scoreboard watching, but they focused on the task at hand and the got the result they wanted. Our seniors continue to play with a great sense of urgency and belief. Ann and Autumn were phenomenal tonight in the middle third.

"While we are disappointed to finish second, we are excited to host a semi-final at Scotland Yard, working towards our next goal of an NCAA berth."

2013 marks the third consecutive season that the Scots have finished in second place in the regular season, and Alma now has the longest consecutive streak of appearances in the MIAA tournament, dating back to 2006.

Tonight's only goal was scored by Alma So. F Kelly Wilson (Midland/Dow), who knocked it in over the keeper's head from 35 yards to give the Scots the 1-0 advantage at the 19:18 mark. The tally would prove to be enough for the 1-0 Alma victory.

Fr. GK Julie DeBus (Howell/Hartland) earned the shutout victory with six saves for the Scots. Fr. M Jessica Burg (Grand Ledge/Grand Ledge) led the Scots with three total shots and two shots on goal, while Fr. F Brianna Russell (Plainwell/Delton-Kellogg) added two shots on net.

As a team, Kalamazoo had 16 total shots to Alma's 12, but the Scots had the 7-6 advantage in shots on goal. The Hornets had three corner kicks on the evening to Alma's one.
