Box Score 2 On a sunny and warm October afternoon, the Alma College women's soccer team hit the road to take on MIAA foe and #19 ranked Calvin College in a key league matchup. The Scots had an early 2-0 lead but the Knights fought back to force overtime and eventually won 3-2 in double overtime.
"This one hurts, it really hurts," said Alma Head Coach Jeff Hosler. "This result was not because of a lack of effort, but a lack of focus and making key plays when they needed to be made. My hat goes off to Calvin ... all three goals came from corner kicks one way or another, and they rose to the challenge and we did not."
With the loss, Alma is now 7-2 in the league and 7-5 overall this season, while Calvin improved to 7-1-1 in the MIAA and 10-1-1 in 2013.
The Scots came out as a determined bunch and grabbed a 1-0 lead when Fr. F Brianna Russell (Plainwell, Mich./Delton Kellogg) shot into an empty net off of a rebound for an unassisted goal at the 12:35 mark.
Alma took a 2-0 advantage at 14:35 when Russell scored her second goal of the game and her sixth of the season. The tally came off of a header on a cross from Jr. D Samantha Waldrop (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) and the future looked bright as the visitors went into halftime with the two-goal lead.
In the first 45 minutes, Alma and Calvin each had 10 total shots with the Scots holding an advantage in shots on goal by a six to four margin. The Knights had five corner kicks to Alma's two in the frame.
The second half had a different feel as Calvin was able to dictate tempo even though Alma held strong for a good portion of those last 45 minutes. The Knights finally got on the board at 70:23 when Kalley Jo was able to deflect a shot past Alma Fr. GK Julie DeBus (Howell, Mich./Hartland).
The contest was tense all the way to the end of regulation and was Calvin was able to tie it at 2-2 when Jo scored off of a corner kick past DeBus at the 86:08 mark. The Knights added 10 additional total shots (seven shots on goal) in the final frame to Alma's three shots (two SOG), and Calvin had five more corner kicks while the Scots had two.
As the teams headed into overtime, Calvin had momentum and even though the first extra frame was scoreless, the Knights recorded the only two shots on goal. The Knights were then able to close out the comeback and capture the win when Jo scored at 106:05 for the 3-2 victory. The deciding tally came off of a tap in by Jo that came through on two passes through the box.
DeBus made 11 saves on the afternoon during the loss, while Russell paced Alma with five total shots, including four on goal. Three other players were able to get the ball on net during Tuesday's match - Fr. M Macayla Greiner (Hart, Mich./Hart), Jr. F Mackenzie Smith (Saginaw, Mich./Nouvel) and So. M Agatha Weddle (White Lake, Mich./Walled Lake Northern).
The Scots continue the 2013 season on Saturday afternoon when they play at MIAA opponent Albion College. The match is scheduled to begin at Noon.
