Box Score On a beautiful late October afternoon, the Alma College women's soccer team defeated Adrian 7-0 at Scotland Yard on Wednesday. With the victory, the Scots improve to 11-6 overall and remain just one game behind Calvin and Hope in the league standings, with an 11-3 mark in the MIAA. The Bulldogs drop to 12-6 on the year with a 10-5 conference record.
"Our seniors led like the great leaders that they are," said Alma Head Coach Jeff Hosler. "They played with a sense of urgency and made plays time and time again in the first half.
"We approached our game plan, applied, and executed it in every aspect of the game today. To score seven goals and maintain a shutout against an opponent as quality as Adrian is very impressive."
Alma got on the board first when Sr. D Autumn Root (Haslett/Haslett) connected on a goal from 25-yards out to put the Scots up 1-0 at 10:03. Sr. M Taryn Handyside (Montrose/Hill-McCloy) collected her fourth goal on the season at 24:52 to put Alma up 2-0 at the midway point of the first half.
Jr. M Mackenzie Smith (Saginaw/Saginaw Nouvel) found the back of the net at 30:00 off a double-assist by So. M Agatha Weddle (White Lake/Walled Lake Northern) and So. F Kelly Wilson (Midland/Dow) to extend the Scots advantage to 3-0. With just eight seconds remaining in the first half, Handyside notched her second goal of the afternoon to put Alma up 4-0 heading into halftime.
Smith collected her second goal of the game at 51:01 to extend the lead to 5-0 early in the second half. Fr. F Brianna Russell (Plainwell/Delton Kellogg) tallied her seventh goal of the season off a double-assist by So. D Katy Stephan (Lansing/DeWitt) and So. D Jenny McClumpha (Lansing/Holt) to stretch the Scot lead to 6-0 with just under 15 minutes remaining in regulation.
Just over a minute later, Russell would score again, this time off an assist by Fr. D Megan Kalanik (Milford/Lakeland) to seal the 7-0 victory for Alma.
Statistically, the Scots dominated Adrian, holding the 26-3 advantage in shots and recording four corner kicks compared to three by the Bulldogs.
In goal, Fr. GK Julie DeBus (Howell/Hartland) tallied two saves for Alma while Taylor Royce finished with nine for Adrian.
The Scots end their home stand on Saturday, November 2, when they welcome Trine to Scotland Yard in a match set for 12:00 p.m.
