Box Score Despite being down 2-0 early, the Alma College men's soccer team fought back to tie Albion 2-2 on the road on Tuesday evening. The Scots are now 9-6-1 overall with a 5-6-1 conference record. With the tie, the Britons are 7-9-2 on the year and 4-6-2 in the MIAA.
"Early on you saw a team still smarting from two confidence-draining losses last week," said Alma Head Coach Josh Oakley. "We were no where close to sharp and Albion made up pay not once, but twice. We showed amazing resolve and got the goals back before halftime."
"We had many chanced to win it, my only disappointment is that our guys did not stay focused throughout and lost emotional control in the closing seconds and picked up a red card. We must expect and demand a higher level of concentration and maturity from ourselves.
It took just over two minutes for Albion to get on the board when Andrew Byrne found the back of the net off an assist by Mike Tolkacz to give the Britons a 1-0 advantage early. Albion continued to apply pressure and Mike Tolkacz tallied a goal at 16:42 to put the Britons up 2-0. Alma weathered the storm and Fr. D Aaron Griffin (Glen Ellyn, IL/Glenbard West) recorded his first-career goal off an assist by So. M Matt Sovis (Williamston/Willamston) to narrow the lead to 2-1. Sovis notched another assist, this time to Fr. F Tyler Raab (Mason/Mason), to tie the score at 2-2 late in the first half.
Both teams exchanged scoring opportunities in the second half but neither was able to capitalize and the game went into overtime.
In the first overtime period, both teams recorded one shot but were unable to score and the game went into a second overtime. The second overtime period saw both teams unable to mount an attack and the game ended in a 2-2 tie.
In goal, Jr. GK Brett Galloway (Clinton Township/Chippewa Valley) recorded seven saves in a season-high 110 minutes played for Alma while Kieran O'Keefe tallied three saves for the Britons.
The Scots are back in action again on Saturday, Nov. 2, when they take on league-leading Calvin at Scotland Yard at 2:30 p.m.
