Scots dominate, claim 11-0 victory over Olivet at home Tuesday

Box Score

On a chilly Tuesday afternoon, the Alma women's soccer team blanked Olivet 11-0 at home. The win marks the seventh-straight victory for the Scots over the Comets and 11-point margin of victory is the highest for Alma since a 15-0 win over Finlandia in 2008. The Scots improve to 10-5 on the year and remain in the hunt for the MIAA lead with a 10-2 conference record. Olivet drops to 6-9 overall and 3-9 in the MIAA.

"It feels good to have an offensive output like we did today, our buildup and decision-making was sharp," said Alma Head Coach Jeff Hosler. "There have been several matches this season where the score line told a story a little different then the way it played, so it was good to open things up today."

"I know that our girls were very excited to be back at Scotland Yard after playing seven of our last eight matches on the road. All of our attention will quickly be turning to a very good Hope College team."

Alma applied pressure early and Jr. D Samantha Waldrop (Ann Arbor/Pioneer) collected her first goal of the season off a corner kick at the 4:19 mark. The Scots continued to rack up shots until Fr. M Macayla Greiner (Hart/Hart) found the back of the net off an assist by Fr. M Jessica Burg (Grand Ledge/Grand Ledge) to give Alma the 2-0 advantage early. Less than two minutes later, Jr. F Mackenzie Smith (Saginaw/Saginaw Nouvel) tallied a goal off a cross to put the Scots up 3-0.

Sr. D Autumn Root (Haslett/Haslett) collected her second goal of the season off of a corner kick to put Alma up 4-0 at the 22:13 mark. Smith recorded back-to-back assists to Sr. M Taryn Handyside (Montrose/Hill-McCloy) and Jr. M Kailey Vlug (Coopersville/Coopersville) to extend the Scot lead to 6-0 at the 27:49 mark.  Smith then knocked in her second goal of the afternoon off an assist from Root to make it 7-0. Handyside found the back of the net again at the 35:06 mark to give the Scots the 8-0 advantage heading into the second half.

So. F Kelly Wilson (Midland/Dow) beat two defenders to score her fourth goal of the season to give Alma the 9-0 lead early in the second half. At the 59:22 mark So. M Agatha Weddle (White Lake/Walled Lake Northern) got past the back line of Olivet to score her seventh goal of the season and extended the Scots lead to 10-0.  Fr. F Megan Kalanik (Milford/Lakeland) recorded her first-career goal at the 67:33 mark to seal the 11-0 shutout victory to Alma.

The Scots dominated the shots battle, holding the Comets to just one while talling 28. Alma also recorded 12 corner kicks to Olivet's zero.

In goal, Fr. GK Julie DeBus (Howell/Hartland) finished with one save for Alma and Kori Ramirez totaled six for the Comets in the loss.

The Scots return to Scotland Yard on Saturday, October 26, to take on Hope College in an important upper division contest between the two teams. The match is scheduled to begin at Noon.
