Box Score Wednesday afternoon saw the Alma College women's soccer team take on host Trine University in a MIAA contest in Angola, Ind. The Scots were able to prevail 1-0 in a tough defensive match, and with the win, Alma is now 6-1 in the MIAA and 6-4 overall. Trine is now 1-6 in the league and 2-7 in 2013.
"Trine put up a good side out there today and Teri deserves a lot of credit for the improvements they've made and he had them ready to play," said Alma Head Coach Jeff Hosler. "We really lack a sense of urgency right now and we keep waiting for the game to come to us. This will have to get better for us to achieve any of our goals."
The Scots scored early at 10:19, when Fr. M Jessica Burg (Grand Ledge, Mich./Grand Ledge) knocked in a ball from Jr. M/F Kailey Vlug (Coopersville, Mich./Coopersville) off of a corner kick. The tally gave the visitors a 1-0 lead and would prove to be the only goal by either team during the contest.
For the game, Alma outshot Trine by a margin of 20-9, including 10-2 in shots on goal. Sr. M/F Taryn Handyside (Montrose, Mich./Hill-McCloy) paced the Scots with three total shots, all of them on net in the win.
Fr. D/M Megan Kalanik (Milford, Mich./Lakeland) had four total shots (two on goal) for Alma, while Vlug finished with two shots, both on net. Fr. GK Julie DeBus (Howell, Mich./Hartland) earned the shutout victory in net for the Scots by making two saves on the afternoon.
The Scots will continue their season on Saturday afternoon when Kalamazoo College visits Scotland Yard for Homecoming 2013. Match time is scheduled to begin at Noon.
