Box Score On Saturday afternoon, the Alma College women's soccer team had to come from behind to defeat a pesky, much-improved Albion Britons team on the road. Trailing 1-0 at halftime. the Scots scored three unanswered goals in the final 45 minutes to escape with the 3-1 victory.
Alma is now 8-2 in the MIAA and 8-5 overall this season, while the Britons fell to 0-9-1 in the MIAA and 2-10-1 in 2013.
"We put ourselves in a hole today, while their goalkeeper came up huge twice in the first half on what was thought to be sure goals," remarked Alma Head Coach Jeff Hosler. "However, the girls showed tremendous resiliency and thoroughly dominated the second half.
"While you never want to find yourself behind, we learned that we are more than capable of playing from behind if we find ourselves in that position again."
The Britons stunned the visiting Scots with an unassisted goal just 4:45 into the match and carried that 1-0 advantage all the way through the first half of action, leading at the intermission.
Alma answered quickly in the second half when Jr. F Mackenzie Smith (Saginaw, Mich./Nouvel) found the back of the net unassisted to tie the score up at 1-1 at the 49:49 mark.
So. M Agatha Weddle (Walled Lake, Mich./Walled Lake Northern) put the Scots ahead 2-1 at 73:35 when she scored a goal assisted by Sr. D Autumn Root (Haslett, Mich./Haslett) and Fr. M Macayla Greiner (Hart, Mich./Hart).
Alma put the capper on the game as Weddle made it a 3-1 contest at 81:03, assisted by Smith and the Scots were able to tighten the screws and walk off the pitch with the hard-fought, two-goal road victory. Fr. GK Marissa Platz (Belmont, Mich./Rockford) had one save in earning the victory for Alma in net.
The Scots continue the 2013 campaign on Wednesday when they play at Saint Mary's College (Ind.) in an MIAA contest. The match against the Belles is scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m.
