Box Score On Saturday afternoon, the Alma College Women's Basketball team hit the road to take on MIAA foe Kalamazoo College and came away with the 67-52 victory. With the win, the Scots now have a 5-4 league mark and are 6-11 overall, while the Hornets dropped to 0-9 in the MIAA and 1-16 in 2012-13.
"We came out slow today but after a time we were able to regroup," remarked Scots Head Coach Keisha Brown. "We were able to convert off of some turnovers our pressure created. We were also able to get some good transition buckets. We played hard and will continue to get after it one game at a time."
As has happened often this season, the Scots fell behind early but they recovered quickly on the this day. Kalamazoo jumped out to a 6-0 lead and led 11-4 at the 16:15 mark. Alma went on a 12-0 run over the next three minutes to take a 16-11 advantage when Fr. F Raeanna Zink (Birch Run, Mich./Frankenmuth) put in a lay-up.
Alma took their biggest lead of the game at 2:49 when Sr. F Danielle Hicks (Marshall, Mich./Marshall) connected on a jump shot for a 28-16 lead. The Scots were then able to maintain that advantage and went into halftime leading by a score of 32-20.
The Scots, currently holding the fourth and final tournament spot in the MIAA, did what playoff teams are supposed to do in the second half. They did not allow the Hornets to get comfortable and make a run, maintaining and even increasing their advantage.
The visitors were able to make good use of their entire bench and when Jr. G Brittney Deerfield (Gaylord, Mich./Gaylord) put in a lay-up, the Scots had their biggest lead a 58-37 midway through the second half. From that point on, the advantage stayed between 15 and 20 and Alma eventually walked off the court with the 67-52 win.
Nine players scored for the Scots and they were led by So. G Mallory Pruett's (Ishpeming, Mich./Ishpeming) 16 points. She was followed by Jr. F Mary Schlicher (Lewiston, Mich./Johannesburg-Lewiston) who had 12 and Fr G Courtney Waara's (Negaunee, Mich./Negaunee) nine.
Schlicher had team highs with eight rebounds, four assists and six blocked shots, while Hicks added seven boards and two steals. Waara added six rebounds, while Deerfield and Pruett had four and three steals respectively.
Alma continues their season on Wednesday night when they play at Mid-Michigan Community College. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
