Scots Women's Hoops captures big 70-58 MIAA win over visiting Adrian College on Saturday afternoon

Box Score

Adrian College arrived in town on Saturday for an important MIAA match-up at Art Smith Arena and the host Scots were up to the challenge, coming away with the 70-58 victory. Alma improved to 3-4 in the league with the win and 4-11 overall, while the Bulldogs dropped to 3-4 in the MIAA and 4-11 in 2012-13.

"Today was a big game for us in the league as it was a make or break one for us," said Scots Head Coach Keisha Brown. "The girls played with confidence and got it done from beginning to end and that is what we need to do to win games. It also helped that we had four people in double figures and I thought our line-up change with Liv starting gave us a lot of energy coming out of the gate."

Slow starts have been a problem for the Scots all season, but on this day, the team turned the tables on their opponent. Alma got off to a 6-0 lead after a jumper by Jr. F Bailey Gooding (Gaylord, Mich./Gaylord) at the 17:15 mark and never trailed in the game. Adrian made it a 10-9 game with 12:05 left in the half, but the Scots were able to get some breathing room from that point.

The Scots proceeded to go on a 16-2 run and led 26-11 after a three-pointer by So. G Grace Wheeler (St. Ignace, Mich./LaSalle) at the 5:13 mark. Alma basically played even with the Bulldogs the rest of the frame and went into halftime with a 34-20 advantage.

In the second half, the Scots did what home teams are supposed to do with the lead in an important game - never really let the opponent back into it. The lead stayed at 14 to 16 points most of the half and Alma actually led by 19, 58-39, after a lay-up by Gooding with 7:07 left in the contest.

The Bulldogs fought hard and cut the lead to 64-55 at the 1:48 mark, but the Scots were a determined bunch and walked off the court with the 70-58 win.

Alma had four players finish in double figures in a nice display of a balanced offensive attack. Gooding had 11 points and added six rebounds, while Jr. F Mary Schlicher (Lewiston, Mich./Johannesburg-Lewiston) also had 11 points with five rebounds and three blocked shots defensively.

So. G Mallory Pruett (Ishpeming, Mich./Ishpeming) had 10 points, while Wheeler finished with 10 points and had three steals and four assists. Sr. F Danielle Hicks (Marshall, Mich./Marshall) contributed eight points, four steals, four assists and six rebounds.

The Scots will next travel to Angola, Indiana on Wednesday night to take on Trine University in another key league match-up. Tip-off against the Thunder is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
