Box Score The fledgling Alma College Women's Lacrosse program took on Olivet College at Bahlke Field on a blustery and cool late March afternoon and came away with a hard-fought 13-12 victory. The win improved the Scots to 4-5 on the season, while the Comets are now 0-9 in 2012.
"I am proud of our girls in getting the win, especially after the tough loss to Davenport last Saturday," said Alma Head Coach Laurie Jordan. "I thought Olivet came out really strong and our team had to react to their play. The fact of the matter is that we earned the win and moving forward, we just need to be a bit more focused from the beginning. Now we get ready for Hope next Wednesday."
The game was close throughout and Olivet scored the first goal of the game at 22:59 of the first half. The game was tied at 4-4 until the Scots went on a 4-0 run to take a 8-4 lead at 1:37, when Sr. A Patricia Reynolds (Grand Rapids, Mich./Central Catholic) scored. The Comets responded with two of their own and Alma went into halftime with an 8-6 lead.
The close knit affair see-sawed back and forth in the second half and was tied at 12-12 when the Comets scored with 8:06 remaining in the match. The rest of the way was a defensive and cautious affair, but the Scots broke through with the winning goal at 5:57, when Reynolds scored unassisted. Alma rode that final tally off the field with a 13-12 conquest of the Comets.
In the win, Reynolds led the Scots with four goals, while three other players tallied two in the victory - Jr. A Brittney Cole (Lansing, Mich./East Lansing), Fr. M Tracy Gallihugh (Lansing, Mich./Waverly) and Jr. M Mary Harwood (Port Huron, Mich./Northern). In net, So. GK Stephanie Herman (Bay City, Mich./All-Saints Central) had five saves.
The Scots are now off until Wednesday, April 4, when they host Hope College at Bahlke Field. The match is scheduled to begin at 5:00 p.m.
