Box Score On Saturday afternoon, the Alma Women's Basketball team will traveled to Kalamazoo College for an MIAA contest and came away with the 65-55 victory. With the win, the Scots now have a record of 4-8 in the league and 6-15 overall, while the host Hornets fell to 2-10 in the MIAA and 4-17 for the 2011-12 season.
The game was a low scoring affair for the first ten minutes as the contest was tied at 11-11 with 9:33 remaining in the half. However, the Scots took command from that point and outscored the Hornets by a margin of 27-7 to take a 38-18 lead into halftime. Alma was sparked by six (of nine) three-pointers in the first frame that allowed the visitors to build the lead.
Alma built the lead to 25, at 43-18, when Jr. G Danielle Hicks (Marshall, Mich./Marshall) converted a three-point play with 18:13 left in the game. An 11-0 run over the next three minutes closed the gap to 14 at 43-29, but Hicks put the lead back to 20 when she hit a lay-up to make the score 49-29 with 10:42 remaining.
But, the Hornets would not go quietly, and after a 17-4 run, the Alma lead was seven at 53-46 at the 2:45 mark. The Scots would hold of the Kalamazoo on this afternoon with the help of 10 made free throws over the final 2:30, and the visitors walked off the court with the 65-55 win.
Sr. G Rachel Jaksa (Mt. Pleasant, Mich./Sacred Heart) led the team with 15 points (seven free throws and two three-pointers), while Sr. G Jessica DeBruin (Muskegon, Mich./Mona Shores) added 12 points. Fr. G Mallory Pruett (Ishpeming, Mich./Ishpeming) and So. F Bailey Gooding (Gaylord, Mich./Gaylord) contributed 10 points and So. F Mary Schlicher (Lewiston, Mich./Johannesburg-Lewiston) had a team-high 10 rebounds.
The Scots next play at Albion College on Wednesday evening beginning at 7:30 p.m.
