Box Score On Saturday afternoon, the Alma College Women's Basketball team hosted Albion College at Art Smith Arena and lost a 63-48 league contest. With the loss, the Scots are now 2-2 in the MIAA and 2-5 overall, while the Britions improved to 1-4 in the league and 2-8 in 2012-13.
"Tonight, we did not match their energy," said Alma Head Coach Keisha Brown. "Yeah, the free throw situation hurt us, but we can't place blame there. We just didn't move our feet as we were reaching a lot. We never got the sense of urgency that we needed. But, our girls know what they need to do so we are now getting ready for Monday."
The two teams played a close first half all the way through as Albion had just two early leads at 2-0 and then 4-3 at the 18:18 mark. The Scots then led for almost the rest of the half, building a 25-17 advantage when Jr. F Bailey Gooding (Gaylord, Mich./Gaylord) hit a lay-up with 6:14 remaining in the half. Albion did close out the frame on a 11-3 run and tied the score at 28-28 with five seconds left.
The second half started slowly for both teams and the Scots found themselves with a 36-32 advantage after a jumper by Fr. F Raeanna Zink (Birch Run, Mich./Frankenmuth) at the 13:48 mark. Alma had their final lead of the game at 38-37 with 11:41 left after Jr. F Mary Schlicher (Lewiston, Mich./Johannesburg-Lewiston) connected on a jump shot.
Albion then proceeded to go on a 8-0 run and took a 45-38 lead with 9:44 remaining in the contest. The Scots cut it to three at 47-44 on a jump shot by Fr. G Kassidi Adams (Montrose, Mich./Montrose) at 6:25.
However, things went downhill from there for the home team as the Britons went on a 14-1 run over the next 5:30 and cruised to the 15-point victory.
So. G Mallory Pruett (Ishpeming, Mich./Ishpeming) led the Scots with 14 points in the loss, while Schlicher added 10 and a team-high eight rebounds. Sr. F Danielle Hicks (Marshall, Mich./Marshall) also added eight boards and a team-best seven assists and Sr. G Stephanie Faller (Saginaw, Mich./Valley Lutheran) contributed five rebounds, two assists and a steal.
For the game, the Scots shot 29% (20 of 68) including three of 16 from beyond the arc, while the Britons finished at 32% (14 of 44) and three of 12 from thee-point land. Albion went to the free throw line 44 times and converted 32 of them, while Alma shot just nine times from the charity stripe, hitting five of them.
The Scots will host Elmhurst College at 3:00 p.m. on Monday at Art Smith Arean in their last home game of 2012. The JV team will play at 1:00 p.m.
