Box Score The Alma College Women's Soccer team hosted MIAA foe Kalamazoo College on Wednesday afternoon in a battle of first place teams at Scotland Yard. The Scots scored early and late, coming away with a 4-2 victory, taking over sole possession of the top spot in the league. Alma is now 9-1 overall and 5-1 in the MIAA, while the Hornets are now 4-2 in the league and 5-4 for the 2011 season.
"I think that offensively, we are starting to figure things out and utilizing space and capitalizing on our chances," said Alma Head Coach Jeff Hosler. "We found ourselves in a tough spot as Kalamazoo scored two quick goals to tie the game against us. But, our girls responded well and closed out the game and gave us the win. On Saturday, we play a Trine team that is very well coached and will be very organized and I expect them to put up a very good fight against us."
The Scots scored just 15 seconds into the game, as Jr. M/F Elaine Cunnigham (Ada, Mich./Forest Hills Central) scored on a pass from Sr. M Becky Marton(Williamston, Mich./Williamston) giving the home team a 1-0 lead. Alma took a 2-0 advantage at the 16:51 mark, when So. M/F Taryn Handyside (Montrose, Mich./Hill-McCloy) netted a goal, again assisted by Marton.
In the second half, the Hornets proved they would not quit, as team leader Jackie Short scored two goals at the 73:10 and 77:01 marks to tie the contest at 2-2. The game was very much in doubt at that point, but the Scots were not to be denied on this afternoon.
At 80:49, Sr. M/F Carly Reising (Otsego, Mich./Otsego) connected on a play assisted by Handyside that gave the Scots a 3-2 lead. Not long after that, Fr. M/F Kelley Vlug (Coopersville, Mich./Coopersville) finished a pass from Cunningham, giving Alma the 4-2 victory of margin.
The Scots continue the 2011 season on Saturday, when they travel to Angola, Indiana, to take on league rival Trine University. The game is scheduled to start at Noon.
