Alma Women's Soccer wins 3-1 at Hope College on Saturday

The Alma Women's Soccer team traveled to Holland today to take on Hope College and came away with a 3-1 MIAA victory. The Scots are now 4-1 league mark and 8-1 overall, while the Flying Dutch now stand at 3-1 in the MIAA and are 5-2 in 2011.

After a scoreless first half, Alma got on the board early in the second frame, when Sr. M Lauren Haines (Midland, Mich./Midland) scored unassisted at 45:54 for a 1-0 lead. The Flying Dutch tied the match at 60:32, making it a 1-1 game going down the stretch.

However, the visiting Scots were determined and scored two goals less than three minutes apart to put the game away. Fr. D Samantha Waldrop (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) connected on an assist from Sr. M Annette Stromberg (N. Muskegon, Mich./N. Muskegon) at 73:10.

At the 75:15 mark, Fr. F Mackenzie Smith (Saginaw, Mich./Saginaw Nouvel) put the game away with a helper from Sr. M/F Carly Reising (Otsego, Mich./Otsego), giving the Scots the 3-1 advantage.

For the game, Sr. GK Monica Witt (Clio, Mich./Clio) had four saves to pick up the win for Alma. As for shots on goal, Smith, Jr. M/F Elaine Cunningham (Ada, Mich./Forest Hills Central) and So. M/F Taryn Handyside (Montrose, Mich./Hill-McCloy) each had two. Haines and Waldrop each had one for the Scots.

Alma will next play on Wednesday, when they host Kalamazoo College at Scotland Yard, beginning at 4:00 p.m.
