Scots Women's Soccer defeats Calvin, 2-1 on Tuesday

Box Score

The Alma Women's Soccer team traveled to Grand Rapids on Tuesday to take on MIAA rival Calvin College and came away with a hard fought 2-1 road win. With the victory, the Scots are now 2-1 in league play and 6-1 overall, while the Knights fell to 1-1 in the MIAA and 1-5 for the 2011 season.

After falling behind in the first five minutes of the second half, the Scots got the equalizer at 63:17 from Jr. M Elaine Cunningham (Ada, Mich./Forest Hills Central) and the go-ahead winner from Sr. M/F Carly Reising (Ostego, Mich./Ostego) at 88:53.

"I think our team really showed their character today after falling behind early in the second half," said Alma Head Coach Jeff Hosler. "We fought back and were able to get the game-winner with just a little over a minute remaining. We are still not playing our best at this point, but a win at Calvin is always a positive and we will continue to build on this moving forward this weekend."

The first half was scoreless, as the Scots had the only three shots on goal in the initial 45 minutes, and Alma had the advantage in total shots by a margin of 6-4.

Calvin opened the scoring at 49:23, when Liz Cancel got a shot past Alma Sr. GK Monica Witt (Clio, Mich./Clio), assisted by Danielle Carter. Cunningham scored unassisted in the 64th minute with a shot to the far right post, tying the game at 1-1. In the 89th minute, Reising finished a rebound off of a Cunningham attempt to give the Scots the 2-1 margin of victory.

For the game, Alma had 16 total shots (eight shots on goal), while Calvin finished with 14 (four shots on goal). Witt had three saves in earning the victory for the Scots.

Alma continues a week on the road when they travel to Saint Mary's on Thursday, before playing at Hope College on Saturday afternoon. The Scots' next home game is September 28, when they host Kalamazoo College at Scotland Yard, beginning at 4:00 p.m.
