As the Alma Women's Basketball team took on Kalamazoo on Wednesday evening, the game started to have a familiar feel to it - unfortunately. The Scots fought hard, had a chance to win the game, but in the end, came up short as the Hornets walked away with a 61-57 victory. Alma fell to 0-13 in the MIAA and 1-21 overall, while Kzoo is now 3-10 in the league and 4-17 for 2010-11.
"I am disappointed about tonight and we won't win games until we become more consistent," said Scots Head Coach Keisha Brown. "We did not play with the intensity that we did on Saturday, and that, with the lack of emotion, really hurt us. We dig ourselves holes that become hard to get out of, and now we just need to go out and play the last three games with pride and passion."
The first half, like most of the game was very competitive. The Scots had a 21-20 lead with 2:55 left, when Fr. G Brittany Deerfield (Gaylord, MI/Gaylord) hit two free throws. However, the Hornets finished the half on an 8-0 run to take a 28-21 advantage into halftime.
In the second half, Alma led on three different occasions, the last being at 52-50, when Sr. F Sydney Beckwith (Weidman, MI/Beal City) dropped in a lay-up with 5:29 left in the game. The Hornets were a persistent group and after Alma tied the score at 54-54, the home team closed out the last 3:13 of the game strong, and came away with the 61-57 win.
On the evening, the Scots were led by Beckwith's 23 points and also received 17 points and seven rebounds from So. G Danielle Hicks (Marshall, MI/Marshall). Alma's next game will be at home against Adrian College on Saturday afternoon. Tip-off at Art Smith Arena is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
