Box Score

On Saturday, the Alma Women's Soccer team had Senior Day 2011 to honor seven young women that have had quite the positive impact on the Scots' program over their four years. Appropriately, the home team took care of business by beating Albion by a score of 5-0.

With the win, Alma improved to 16-3-1 on the season and 12-3-1 in the MIAA, good enough to host a playoff game next Thursday afternoon at Scotland Yard, with game time and opponent to be determined. The Britons are now 0-18-1 for 2011 and 0-14-1 in the league.

The seven seniors -  D Brooke Bergeron, F Maria Castaneda, M Lauren Haines, M Becky Marton, M/F Carly Reising, M Annette Stromberg, and GK Monica Witt - were honored before the game in a celebration of their accomplishments during their careers.

"These seniors meant so much to our program over these past four years and it was great that Maria, the most unselfish member of the team scored the first goal of the game that proved to be the game-winner," said Alma Head Coach Jeff Hosler. "The postseason has been our focus all season and I know that is what the girls are focused on as we wait to see who we play."

In the game against Albion, the Scots scored two goals in the first half and controlled play throughout the first 45 minutes. The first tally came from Castaneda from Reising a 22:50, and then So. M/F Taryn Handyside (Montrose, Mich./Hill-McCloy) connected for a 2-0 lead on an assist from Fr. M/F Kailey Vlug (Coopersville, Mich./Coopersville) at 36:30.

The Scots cemented the victory with three goals in the second half to come away with the 5-0 margin of victory. Marton scored on a header from Reising at 51:22 to make 3-0 and that was followed by a Vlug goal at 68:49, again assisted by Reising. The final goal of the game was scored by Fr. F Ashley Oltman (Wheaton, IL/Wheaton) on an assist by Jr. M/F Elaine Cunningham (Ada, Mich./Forest Hills Central).
