Alma Women's Soccer takes down Saint Mary's 2-1

On a homecoming day that was chilly and very windy, the Alma College Women's Soccer team fought the elements and held off a tenacious Saint Mary's squad, defeating the Belles 2-1. The Scots improved to 12-2-1 overall and 8-2-1 in the MIAA, while Saint Mary's left town with a mark of 8-6 in 2011 and 4-6 in the league.

Alma began the scoring at 39:56, when Jr. M/F Elaine Cunningham (Adam, Mich./Forest Hills Eastern) scored on a cross from Sr. M/F Carly Reising (Otsego, Mich./Otsego) for a 1-0 lead that the team took into halftime.

The Scots increased their lead to 2-0 at the 57:19 mark when Reising head butted in a cross from Sr. M Annette Stromberg (North Muskegon, Mich./North Muskegon) that bounced off of the head of So. D/M Autumn Root (Haslett, Mich./Haslett). Both players were given assists on the odd play.

The Belles did not give up however, as they cut the deficit to 2-1, when Kaitlin Teichman scored on an assist from Ketelyn Tondo-Steele, knocking it past Alma Sr. GK Monica Witt (Clio, Mich./Clio) at 65:12. 

However, Alma was able to keep Saint Mary's at bay the rest of the way to walk off of the pitch with the victory. Reising finished with six shots on goal in addition to her goal and assist, while Root and Fr. M/F Kailey Vlug (Coopersville, Mich./Coopersville) each added two shots on net.

The Scots continue their 2011 campaign on Monday at Olivet, and will then return home on Thursday, to take on Trine University at Scotland Yard. Both games are scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m.
