Alma Women's Basketball tests #1 Hope, but lose 48-39

The Scots Women's Basketball team hit the road on Saturday to take on number one ranked Hope College in Holland. The heavy underdog Alma squad gave their all and pushed the Flying Dutch to the limit, but in the end, Hope came away with a hard-fought 48-39 victory.

"Our kids played exceptionally well as we held Hope to their lowest scoring output of the season," said Head Coach Keisha Brown. "We did a great job defensively, but turnovers again hurt us on offense. But, we are looking forward to the next few games, as I really believe we are starting to get it as a team. It should be fun moving forward.

The game was close throughout the first half, as Alma took a 20-19 lead, when Fr. G Anna Mattson (Brighton, MI/Brighton) hit a jumper with 4:23 left. But Hope was able to regain a lead and went into halftime with a 25-22 advantage over the visitors.

Alma continued to play their hearts out in the second half and had the hometown Flying Dutch worrying. The Scots took their final lead of the game, at 33-32, when So. G Stephanie Faller (Saginaw, MI/Valley Lutheran) hit a three-pointer at the 12:20 mark.

However, Hope was able to prevail, even though it was still a two-possession game with just 2:00 minutes to go in the game after So. G Danielle Hicks (Marshall, MI/Marshall) hit a jumper, to make the score 42-37. The Flying Dutch held off the pressing Scots to preserve the victory.

Alma continues their season next Saturday, when they host Saint Mary's College at Art Smith Arena, beginning at 3:00 p.m.
