Box Score The Alma Women's Soccer team opened up MIAA play on Wednesday afternoon and came away with a 3-0 victory over visiting Olivet College. The win improved the Scots to 7-3, while the Comets fell to 9-2-1.
Alma will host Saint Mary's on Saturday at Scotland Yard, beginning at Noon. The game marks Alma's Kick for a Cure campaign, designed to raise awareness and money for the fight against Breast Cancer.
The Scots took an early 1-0 lead on Wednesday, when Fr. F Autumn Root (Haslett, MI/Haslett) scored her first-career collegiate goal at the 8:31 mark, assisted by Jr. M Becky Marton (Williamston, MI/Williamston). Alma took a 2-0 lead into halftime as Jr. F Alli Meurer (Holland, MI/Zeeland West) scored unassisted at 41:56.
The only goal of the second half came at 72:57, when So. M/F Elaine Cunningham (Ada, MI/Forest Hills Central) scored, assisted by Jr. Annette Stromberg (North Muskegon, MI/North Muskegon). The tally gave the home team a 3-0 lead that would eventually be the final margin of victory.
For the game, Alma outshot Olivet by a margin of 26-7 (9-5 shots on goal), and saw Jr. GK Monica Witt (Clio, MI/Clio) earn her fourth shutout of the season. Fr. M Taryn Handyside (Montrose, MI/Hill-McCloy) and Sr. F Jessica Swan (Romeo, MI/Romeo) led the way for Alma with six and five shots respectively, both getting two on goal.
