The Alma Volleyball team traveled to Springfield, OH on Friday to take part in the annual Ohio-Michigan Border Battle and went 1-1 on the day. The Scots dropped the opener, 3-0, to Mt. St. Joseph, but rebounded with a huge come from behind 3-2 victory over #12 Ohio Northern in the nightcap. Alma is now 8-1 in 2010 heading into the tournament's final two games.
"After losing a tough first match, our win against Ohio Northern was an outstanding effort by our team," said Alma Head Coach Cheyenne Luzynski. "Being down 2-0 and coming back to win the way did showed how our kids overcame adversity and came together as a team. They competed until the end and we had the feeling that we were not leaving without the win."
The 3-2 win against Ohio Northern was by the scores of 16-25, 9-25, 25-23, 27-25 and 15-10 and came after a 3-0 close loss to Mt. St. Joseph. The Scots lost that match by scores of 19-25, 23-25, 25, as Alma could have come out on top with a few breaks.
Ohio is leading the competition for state bragging rights, with the four teams from the Buckeye State out to a 6-2 lead after the first day of competition. Michigan has never won the Border Battle, although the two sides tied 8-8 in 2006 and the Michigan reps hope to make some noise tomorrow.
Wittenberg and 19th-ranked Heidelberg both finished the day 2-0, while Calvin wound up a surprising 0-2. Alma, Hope, Mount St. Joseph and Ohio Northern all enter Day 2 with 1-1 marks.
