Wednesday was a very exciting day for Alma College Athletics, as the Volleyball team played Trine University in the inaugural sporting event in the brand new Art Smith Arena. The match, played on the Charles and Marion McIntyre Court, was won by the Scots 3-0, as the home team improved to 7-0 in 2010 and 3-0 in the MIAA.
"It was an awesome night for the Scots to open up this great new arena and then to play well to get the win, is something we can remember for a long time," said Scots Head Coach Cheyenne Luzynski. "We still have work to do, but we are excited to go to Wittenberg this weekend for a tournament where we will see some of the best teams in the country."
Alma's three wins against the Thunder were by scores of 25-11, 25-13, and 25-18, and were aided by the large and loud crowd that showed up for the opening of the Art Smith Arena. The Scots rode the momentum of the crowd to the 3-0 win, as they played well early and did not let up until the final decision.
Statistically, Alma Sr. S Hannah Hewitt (Harbor Light, MI/Harbor Light Christian) had 14 assists in two games, while Fr. S Erika VanHavel (Mason, MI/Mason) added 12 assists. Jr. MH Shelby Gray (Orchard Hills, MI/West Bloomfield) had eight kills and Sr. OH Stephanie Bradshaw (Livonia, MI/Churchill) finished with 17 digs.
The Scots will play in the Border Battle Tournament, hosted by Wittenberg University in Springfield, OH this weekend. They will play Mt. St. Joseph at 1:00 p.m. on Friday and then take on Ohio Northern at 5:00 p.m. that afternoon. Alma then will conclude the tournament with games against Heidelberg at Noon on Saturday and then a 4:00 p.m. match with host Wittenberg.
