On Sunday, the Alma Women's Soccer team played Webster University (MO) at Washington University in St. Louis and defeated the Gorlocks 1-0. Today's game was the second game of the weekend trip for the Scots. Alma lost a heartbreaking 1-0 decision to the hosts, Washington University, yesterday.
"After a tough, physical and emotional loss yesterday, the girls really bounced back as a group and played with a chip on their shoulder," said Alma Head Coach Jeff Hosler. "We put together the effort we needed to beat a good regional opponent. We have different players that are stepping up in big situations and it is nice to see different faces doing so when needed. Also, our seniors have collectively done a very good job of leading as individuals and have set good examples."
This morning, the Scots struck quickly as Jr. M/F Carly Reising (Otsego, MI/Otsego) knocked in a corner kick from So. M/F Elaine Cunningham (Ada, MI/Forest Hills Central) just 2:37 into the match. Alma took that 1-0 lead into halftime and outshot Webster by a margin of 7-2 (4-1 SOG), as four different Scots had shots on goal. Jr. GK Monica Witt (Clio, MI/Clio) saved the only shot on her goal in the half.
No goals were scored in the second half and the Scots outshot Webster by a margin of 19-9 (10-4 SOG) in the game. Witt saved four shots on goal in earning the win and the shutout, while Reising, Sr. F Jessica Swan (Romeo, MI/Romeo) and Sr. D Morgan Rudd (Jackson, MI/Jackson) each had two shots on goal.
Alma, 3-2 on the season, returns to Michigan this evening and will next play on Tuesday afternoon, when they host Northwood University at Scotland Yard. The match is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m.
