Box Score The Alma Women's Soccer team traveled to St. Louis, Missouri on Saturday to take on #3 Washington University in the first of two games the Scots will play this weekend. The Scots dropped a heartbreaking 1-0 decision to the Bears as Wash U scored on a 50-yard free kick GK Clara Jacques with just 9:07 remaining in the game. Alma is now 2-2 this season, while the Bears improved to 3-1.
"We talked this week about coming down here and getting results and giving it all that we had, battling every second of the 90 minutes," said Alma Head Coach Jeff Hosler. "We did that today. This one will sting for a bit, but we have to hold our heads high for the level of play that we had this afternoon. We wanted to go home with two wins, but now we need to focus on a good Webster team. The girls said after the game that we are not going home without a win. I can't wait to see how we respond to this tough, physical and emotional loss."
The host Bears outshot the Scots by a margin of 11-3 (6-1 SOG) in the first 45 minutes, with Sr. F Jessica Swan (Romeo, MI/Romeo) notching the lone shot on goal for Alma. Jr. GK Monica Witt (Clio, MI/Clio) played very well in the first half, stopping six Bears shots on goal, four of them by Wash U's Lee Ann Felder.
The second half saw the Bears have 15 shots to the Scots' three, but Witt remained strong in the net and the Alma defense thwarted Washington every step of the way. The Scots finished with six shots (4 SOG) for the game, as Swan finished with two, while Jr. M/F Carly Reising (Otsego, MI/Otsego) and Fr. M Taryn Handyside (Montrose, MI/Hill-McCloy) each added one shot on goal.
The Scots will play Webster University (MO) at Washington on Sunday, beginning at Noon Michigan time. The next home game for Alma is Tuesday afternoon, when they host Northwood University at Scotland Yard, beginning at 3:00 p.m.
