Women's Hoops prevails in overtime at Trine University

The Scots' Women's Basketball team traveled to Trine University on Wednesday evening and came home victorious in a game that looked like it was going to be easy, but ended up as a 72-68 overtime victory. Alma improved to 5-10 in the MIAA (6-18 overall), while Trine is now 6-9 in the league and 11-13 in 2009-10.

Alma jumped out to a 43-24 halftime lead, as the Scots shot 52% from the field, while holding the Thunder to just four of 22 shooting (18%) in the first 20 minutes. Jr. F Sydney Beckwith (Weidman, MI/Beal City) scored 16 of her career-high 29 points in the first half, while Jr. F Kathryn Bigelow (Alma, MI/Alma) added 11 points.

Trine was not going to go down easy however, and the home team fought all the way back to tie the game at 64-64 with five seconds remaining. Although they never led once in the game, the Thunder sent the game into overtime as Liz Gehrig hit a lay-up at that five-second mark.

After the teams exchanged baskets, Alma took a 69-66 lead when Bigelow hit a three-pointer with 3:01 remaining in the first overtime. The Scots increased their lead to 72-66 when Sr. G Lacey Best-Rowden (Lansing, MI/Waverly) hit a free throw with 49 seconds remaining. The visitors were then able to hold on for the road victory.

Beckwith led the Scots with career-bests in points with 29 and rebounds with 13, while Bigelow had a career-high 21 points and added seven rebounds in the win. Best-Rowden had a team-high eight assists, while So. C Aubrey Maxa (Saginaw, MI/Swan Valley) contributed seven rebounds and four points.

Alma concludes the regular season on Saturday afternoon, as they host Calvin College in the last scheduled game ever at Cappaert Gymnasium. The Scots, who will move into a new arena next fall, is also hosting Alumni Weekend and it will be Senior Day as well. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
