Alma Women's Soccer ties #12 Calvin 1-1 in 2 overtimes on Tuesday

The Alma Women's Soccer team hit the road on Tuesday and tied #12 Calvin College, 1-1, in two overtimes. With the result, Alma is now tied with Kalamazoo College for first place, with seven points. On the season, Alma is 8-3-1 overall and 2-0-1 in the MIAA, while Calvin is now 8-2-2 in 2010 and 1-1-1 in the league.

"Calvin played very well, and although you always want two points, our effort was validated by the final score," said Alma Head Coach Jeff Hosler. "There is a lot of MIAA soccer to be played and our girls recognize that fact. We have had a lot going on and some adversity, but we did what we needed to do on the road."

Fr. M Taryn Handyside (Montrose, I/Hill-McCloy) put the Scots ahead 1-0 at the 14:02 mark on a shot off of Calvin GK Ashton Hearn, assisted by Jr. M/F Carly Reising (Otsego, MI/Otsego). Calvin tied the game at 27:21, when Elaine Schnabel scored off of a rebound by Jillian Honderd, past Alma Jr. GK Monica Witt (Clio, MI/Clio).

The second half and the two overtimes were scoreless, as the two teams competed hard, not wanting to give up anything easy. For the game, the stat sheet shows Calvin with a 26-7 shots advantage, and 9-3 in shots actually on goal.

Alma will now travel to California, where they will take on perennial power Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Friday evening (6:00 p.m. Michigan time). The team will then enjoy some Southern California weather before heading back to the balmy climate of Mid-Michigan.

"Anytime you can travel nationally with a team is something that you can take advantage of, and is great for chemistry," said Hosler. "I am having a blast coaching these girls, and we can use this trip to build on what we want to accomplish the rest of the season."

The Scots' next MIAA game will be Wednesday, October 13, when they host Adrian College at Scotland Yard, beginning at 4:00 p.m.
