The Alma Women's Soccer team defeated Hope College on Saturday, 1-0, to clinch at least a share of its first-ever MIAA Championship. The Scots defeated the Dutch in Holland, and with the win, have guaranteed themselves a bye in the first-round of the league tournament.
Alma will host a Semi-Final game at Scotland Yard on November 2, but the top seed for the tournament will not be decided until the last regular season games on Wednesday.
If Alma wins or ties at Albion, the Scots will earn sole possession of the Championship and the number one seed. If the Scots lose and Calvin wins, the teams share the league title, and the Knights will have the top seed based on tie-breaker scenarios.
"Our girls knew what was at stake today, with a win giving us three points and a share of the league title," said Scots Head Coach Jeff Hosler. "They have a very good understanding that our job is not done yet, and when the game was over, there was no celebrating. We knew Hope was going to come out with Senior Day and Homecoming and play very hard, and they did. We did a nice job of battling them and coming away with the win."
After a scoreless first half, the Scots scored the only, and winning goal of the game, when the local girl, Jr. F Alli Meurer (Holland, MI/Zeeland West), scored at 46:41, on an assist from Jr. M/F Carly Reising (Otsego, MI/Otsego). For the game, Alma outshot the Dutch by a margin of 14-12, 7-6 shots on goal, and Scots Jr. GK Monica Witt (Clio, MI/Clio) earned the shutout.
Alma's game at Albion on Wednesday begins at 4:00 p.m.
