Scots Women's Soccer makes 'Kick for a Cure' a success both on and off the field

The Alma Women's Soccer team hosted Saint Mary's College on Saturday on "Kick for a Cure " Day and defeated the Belles, 4-0, at Scotland Yard. The win came on a day that the Scots' made breast cancer awareness the focal point.

Each player wore pink jerseys with the name of an individual the player knows who has been affected by cancer on the back.

The team has been selling t-shirts in Hamilton Commons since Thursday and groups of players hit downtown Alma, handing out fliers promoting the event.  At halftime, two local youth girl's teams played a match, while T-shirts were on sale, a raffle with prizes was conducted and a bake sale took place.

The game was scoreless after one half, but the Scots outshot Saint Mary's by a margin of 7-3, including 4-2 in shots on goal. Jr. F Alli Meurer (Holland, MI/Zeeland West) had five shots (3 SOG) while Jr. M Carly Reising (Otsego, MI/Otsego) had two shots, one on goal. Jr. GK Monica Witt (Clio, MI/Clio) stopped both shots on goal that she faced in the first 45 minutes.

Alma scored quickly in the second half, as Fr. F Taryn Handyside (Montrose, MI/Hill-McCloy) netted a goal just 26 seconds in on an assist by Meurer. So. M Elaine Cunningham (Ada, MI/Forest Hills Central) made the score 2-0 Alma just a bit over two minutes later on a corner kick at 47:33. Reising increased the Scots' lead to 3-0 at 51:32 on goal assisted by Meurer.

The home team closed out the scoring at 76:09, when Meurer headed in a corner kick from Reising, making the final score 4-0 in favor of the Scots. Alma outshot the Belles 13-0 in the final 45 minutes, including 8-0 in shots on goal. Meurer led the way for the Scots with nine total shots and five on goal. Witt recorded the win for the Scots, Jr. GK Emma Heppler (East Lansing, MI/East Lansing) played the last 14:45 of the game.

The Scots are now 8-3 on the season and 2-0 in the MIAA, while Saint Mary's fell to 2-10 in 2010 and 0-2 in the league. Alma will travel to Calvin on Tuesday in a battle of undefeated league teams, with game time scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
