Alma Women's Basketball hits the road and defeats the College of Wooster

As fall term ended on campus, the Alma Women's Basketball hit the road to play three games in the state of Ohio over the next four days. The Scots were victorious in the first one, as they defeated the College of Wooster by a score of 65-59 on Friday evening. The win improved Alma's record to 2-7 on the season, while the home team dropped to the identical 2-7 in 2009-10.

In a game that saw 11 lead changes, nobody led by more than four points in the first half until Alma Fr. G Danielle Hicks (Marshall, MI/Marshall) put in a lay-up at the 1:18 mark. The bucket put the Scots up 29-23, and the visitors took that six-point advantage into halftime. Alma shot 45% in the first 20 minutes, while the host team connected on just 30% of their attempts.

The teams came out a bit cold in the second half and the first field goal came from Wooster's Kym Wenz, who hit a three-pointer at 17:46 to cut the Alma lead to 29-26. However, the Scots went on a 9-1 run over the next three minutes, culminated by a Sr. F Meagan Hoblet (Cadillac, MI/Cadillac) jumper to give the visitors an 11-point advantage.

Alma's lead grew to as much as 15 points, when Hoblet netted a jumper at 7:26 to make the score 50-35. Wooster did not quit, and fought the Scots all the way to the end. The home team cut their deficit to six, at 60-54, when Wenz hit two free throws with 56 seconds remaining.

However, this was going to be Alma's night, as the visitors dropped five of six free throws in the final minute - three by Sr. G Lauren Hasler (Mt. Pleasant, MI/Sacred Heart) and two by Sr. F Kathryn Bigelow (Alma, MI/Alma) - to preserve the win.

Hoblet was the Scots' leading scorer on the evening, finishing with 23, while Jr. F Sydney Beckwith (Weidman, MI/Beal City) was next with 14 points. Bigelow led all Alma players with 10 rebounds, eight assists and four steals, while Hoblet added nine boards and three blocked shots. Beckwith also contributed eight rebounds and two steals, while Wenz finished with 29 points in a losing effort for Wooster.

The Scots continue their Ohio road trip tomorrow afternoon, as they travel to John Carroll University for a 4:00 p.m. contest. They will conclude the trip on Monday afternoon, when they meet Ohio Wesleyan University for a 3:00 p.m. tip-off.
