ALMA WOMEN LOSE TO ALBION 1-0 ON SATURDAY

Something had to give on Saturday afternoon when the MIAA's top scoring team (Alma College) took on one of the stingiest defensive teams in the league (Albion College). Despite several good scoring opportunities, the Britons were able to keep the Scots out of the net and came away with a 1-0 victory at Scotland Yard.

The loss, on a cool and sometimes drizzly Mid-Michigan afternoon, dropped the Scots to 0-1-1 in the MIAA and 4-6-2 overall, while Albion, ranked eighth in the Central Region, improved to 1-1 in league play and 5-2-3 for the 2009 season.

The first half ended scoreless, although Alma led in shots by a margin of eight to three (four to two SOG). Jr. F Jessica Swan (Romeo, MI/Romeo) had a shot on goal in the half while teammate So. M Carly Reising (Otsego, MI/Otsego) hit the net three times, but to avail, as Albion GK Caitlin Bowman stopped all of them.

The only goal of the match game at 70:00, when the Britons' F Ali Oatley scored unassisted, giving the visiting team what proved to be the decisive tally. Alma had eight more shots in the final 45 minutes for 16 total (seven SOG), while Albion notched five shots in the second half and finished with eight (seven SOG). Bowman had seven saves, while Alma Sr. GK Katie Weicksel (Northville, MI/Northville) finished with six stops.

The Scots continue MIAA play on Wednesday, when they travel to Olivet to take on the league rival Comets. The game is scheduled to start at 4:00 p.m. Alma's next home game is Saturday, when they host Trine University in a MIAA tilt beginning at Noon at Scotland Yard. The game is part of the Homecoming 2009 festivities on Alma's campus.
