On Senior Day 2009, the Alma Women's Soccer team took care of business and made sure it was a day of celebration as they defeated Trine University 6-1. The win, at a cold and blustery Scotland Yard, improved the Scots to 8-7-2 on the season and 4-2-1 in the MIAA. The Thunder dropped to 0-16 in 2009 and 0-6 in league play.
The team's four seniors - M Kelsey Bailey (Plymouth, MI/Canton), F Tara Fitzsimmons (Marshall, MI/Marshall), GK Katie Weicksel (Northville, MI/Northville) and M Kelley Walsh (Linden, MI/Fenton) - finished their regular season careers at Scotland Yard in style, as they jumped on Trine early and did not look back.
Fr. M Elaine Cunningham (Ada, MI/Forest Hills) put the Scots ahead 1-0 on a goal assisted by Fitsimmons at 9:07. The assist for Fitzsimmons was the 24th of her career, giving her sole possession of the school record in that category. Less than five minutes later, Jr. M Jessica Swan (Romeo, MI/Romeo) scored on a header assisted by Cunningham at the 13:52 mark.
At 25:11, So. M Carly Reising (Otsego, MI/Otsego) took a pass from Fitzsimmons and dented the net to make it 3-0. Alma closed out the first half scoring when So. F Lauren Haines (Midland, MI/Midland) scored on a corner kick from Fr. M Daniela Vazquez at 39:33.
Cunningham and Fitzsimmons teamed up again at 54:55 to put the Scots up 5-0, before Trine got on the board at 82:55 on a tally by Elizabeth Morgan, with an assist by Sierra Lohr. The final goal of the game was scored by Alma at 88:09, when Vazquez found the back of the net off of a pass from So. M Maria Castaneda (East Lansing, MI/East Lansing), giving the Scots the 6-1 final.
Alma closes out the regular season on Wednesday in a game that has serious implications in terms of who finishes where in the standings. The Scots travel to Kalamazoo, taking on a Hornets team that leads Alma by three points in the standings after today's game. Both teams trying to secure home field for the first round of the playoffs, so the game will have extra meaning. Start time is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
