Alma Women's Soccer drops a tough 1-0 decision to host Adrian College

The Alma Women's Soccer team, fresh off of a win that ended league-leader Calvin College's 40-game MIAA unbeaten streak, took to the road on Tuesday to play Adrian College. The Bulldogs, ranked 8th in the Central Region, were a team that led Alma in the standings going into today's contest and a win on the road would have really jumbled the league's standings.

But, it was not to be on a comfortable fall afternoon in southeast Michigan, as Adrian scored the only goal on the way to a 1-0 victory. The win enabled the hosts to improve to 5-2 in the MIAA, good for 15 points, and 9-5-2 overall. The Scots dropped to 3-2-1 in the league (10 points) and 7-7-2 in 2009.

Often times a team can win the battle of the stat sheet, but lose on the scoreboard and today's game was one of those days for the visiting Scots. Alma outshot Adrian by a final margin of 18-6, including five to one in shots on goal, but the host Bulldogs tallied the only goal of the match.

"Today, the bounces did not go our way, but that happens in this sport," said Alma Head Coach Jeff Hosler. "We are in the MIAA tournament and our team knows there is still a lot of soccer left in this season. We are focused on getting three points on Saturday and putting ourselves in a position to host a first-round playoff game."

That lone score of the contest came at the 35:07 mark when Courtney Pomeroy knocked in a header off the crossbar, on a tally assisted by Lindsay Chitwood. Even though Alma lodged five shots at GK Steffeny Burns, the visitors could not penetrate the goal and Adrian walked off the pitch with a hard-fought victory.

The Scots were led in shots by Fr. M Elaine Cunningham (Ada, MI/Forest Hills), who had five shots (one on goal) and Sr. F Tara Fitzsimmons (Marshall, MI/Marshall), who tallied two shots, both on net. Jr. M/F Jessica Swan (Romeo, MI/Romeo) also kicked three towards the goal and had one that reached.  GK Katie Weicksel (Northville, MI/Northville) played the first half in net for the Scots, while So. Monica Witt (Clio, MI/Clio) tended the net for the final 45 minutes.

Alma hosts Trine University on Saturday afternoon at Scotland Yard. Start time for Senior Day 2009 is set for Noon.
