The Alma Volleyball Program participated in the Dig For A Cure 2009 on Wednesday to raise awareness and money for the fight against breast cancer
Alma's Volleyball team took a big step on Wednesday to establish the hierarchy of the MIAA, when they defeated Saint Mary's 3-2 (25-16, 23-25, 22-25, 29-27, 15-11). The victory, at Cappaert Gymnasium, improved the Scots to 10-9 overall and 7-4 in the MIAA, while the Belles fell to 9-10 (5-6) in 2009. Alma is now in sole possession of third place in the league with five games to go in MIAA play.
"It was a good win for us tonight, but it was not easy for us against a Saint Mary's team that played hard," said Alma Head Coach Cheyenne Luzynski. "We have a tournament this weekend and then have five more league games before the tournament. Also tonight, I feel really good about our efforts in the Dig For A Cure and the fight against breast cancer. The Angel Wings Fund is a wonderful group that is working very hard to eradicate this terrible disease."
So. MH Shelby Gray (Bloomfield Hills, MI/W. Bloomfield) led the Scots with 17 kills, while Fr. OH Katie Bourbonnais (Niles, MI/Niles) and Sr. MH Kelsey Thompson (Morley, MI/Morley-Stanwood) each contributed 14 kills.
The Scots were led in assists by season-leader Jr. S Hannah Hewitt (Alanson, MI/Harbor Light Christian) with 50 on the evening. Five Alma players were in double digits in digs, led by Jr. OH Stephanie Bradshaw (Livonia, MI/Churchill) and So. OH Beth Caldwell (Imlay City, MI/Imlay City), who each had 18.
Alma will have league action off this weekend, but will play in the Elmhurst, IL tournament on Friday and Saturday. The Scots will play four games in the two days, before returning to MIAA play next Wednesday, when they travel to Albion College to take on the Britons.
