Alma Women's Soccer travels to Saint Mary's and wins 5-1

Alma's Women's Soccer team hit the road on Saturday in search of league victory and got it with a convincing 5-1 victory over host Saint Mary's College. The Scots are now 6-6-2 for the season (2-1-1 MIAA), while the Belles dropped to 4-9-1 (1-3 MIAA) in 2009.

The Scots scored three first half goals, with the first coming at 23:52 by M Becky Marton on an unassisted score. Alma made it 2-0 just three minutes later, when M/D Brittany Dulyea connected on a goal assisted by F Alli Meurer. At the 38:32 mark, Meurer decided to get in on the goal piece herself as she converted on a pass from F Jessica Swan for a 3-0 halftime advantage.

The Belles got on the board just four minutes into the second half when Micki Hedinger scored on a goal assisted by Ashley Morfin to cut the Scots lead to 3-1. It was the Scots' day though and Meurer scored her second goal of the afternoon at 67:06, assisted by M Kelley Walsh. The final tally of the game came at 78:12 when M Hannah Bauhof knocked in a shot that was assisted by F Tara Fitzsimmons, who is currently second on the school's all-time assist list, giving Alma the 5-1 final score victory.

Alma finished with 20 shots, 13 of them on goal, while Saint Mary's had 10 for the afternoon, with five on goal. For the Scots, Meurer led the way with five total shots, four of which were on net, while M Carly Reising was close behind with four shots (3 SOG). In the net, goalkeepers Katie Weicksel and Monica Witt both saw action. Weicksel played 53:29 and had two saves, while Witt was in for 36:31 and notched two saves as well.

The Scots return home for a big home contest with MIAA rival Calvin College on Wednesday afternoon. Alma, who lost to Calvin in the league championship last fall, look to make a statement in the match. Start time is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
