Alma, Mi.- The Alma College Lady Scots (8-11, 6-7) came into tonight's game against the Tri-State Thunder (6-16, 2-11) tied for fifth place in the conference and looking to get a win to help move them into the top half of the conference. Despite an onslaught of turnovers in the first half, the Scots pulled through and put together a great victory in front of its home fans by the score of 74-57.
The Scots struggled out of the gate, racking up ten turnovers in the first 15 minutes but held it together to take a three point lead into the half. The second half was a completely different story as the Maroon and Cream hung an outstanding 41 points on the helpless Thunder' defense to bring home the double digit win.
Four of the five Scot' starters reached double digits in scoring and the fifth finished with eight. Leading the way for the team was senior Ashley Matuzak (Saginaw/Nouvel C.C.) who racked up 20 points on nine of 11 shooting, five boards and five assists in the game. With tonight's performance, Matuzak moves to 1,033 career points and ties Kelly Spalding for 11th place on the Alma College Career Points list. Sophomore Meagan Hoblet (Cadillac) played solid for the Scots in her first game back from fighting a sickness as she scored 14 points and led the team with seven rebounds. Danielle Large (Diamondale/Eaton Rapids) played big early and finished with 13 points on 5-6 shooting. Heather Keenan (Charlotte) did her part, chipping in ten boards and a team's best six assists.
With the Scots' win and Adrian and Olivet both losing tonight, Alma finds itself in a three way tie for the fourth spot in the MIAA and a chance to host a first round game in the MIAA Tournament.
The Scots will be tested on the road this Saturday as they travel to take on Albion College with a 3:00 p.m. tip-off.
