ALMA WOMEN'S SOCCER DEFEATS ADRIAN 2-0

On a day honoring Alma's lone senior, D Christine Wheatley (Canton, MI), the Scots continued their string of inspired play heading down the stretch drive of the MIAA season by defeating Adrian College by a score of 2-0.

The game, played at a chilly Scotland Yard, improved Alma to 6-1 in the league and 11-5 overall by winning their fifth straight game. Adrian is now 4-3-1 in MIAA action and 10-5-2 on the season after today's game.

The Scots struck early when M/F Jessica Swan (Romeio, MI) scored on a goal that deflected off the crossbar at 8:01 of the first half. F Tara Fitzsimmons (Marshall, MI) and M Annette Stromberg (North Muskegon, MI) were credited with assists on the tally.

M Samantha Barsotti (Clinton Township, MI) put the game in the win column at the 72:00 mark, by taking a fantastic pass and assist from M/F Carly Reising (Ottsego, MI) and putting the ball into the net for the final score of 2-0 Alma.

The Scots led the game in shots by a margin of 15-4 and were led by Swan with six and Fitzsimmons with four. Goalkeeping duties were split by Katie Weicksel (Northville, MI), who had one save and Emma Heppler (East Lansing, MI), who stopped two Adrian shots.

The Scots next play on Wednesday, when they host third-place Hope College in a  regular season concluding game The game has important playoff seeding implications as  the Flying Dutch are 5-2 in MIAA play and trail Alma by one game in the league standings. The game is scheduled for a 4:00 p.m. start at Scotland Yard.

WHEATLEY NOTES: Wheatley made her 63rd career start for the Scots on Saturday ... She was voted team captain three straight years ... A math major, she is a three-time MIAA All-Academic selection.
