Sept. 22, 2007- On a very busy day for Alma College Athletics, the Women's Soccer Team travelled to Adrian College and brought home a 4-1 win to keep the Scots from being shut out of the win column this weekend. With the victory, the Scots improve to 6-2-1 overall and 1-0 in MIAA action.
The Scots got on the board first in the 31st minute when sophomore Tara Fitzsimmons (Marshall/Marshall) found freshman Jessica Swan (Romeo/Romeo) on a beautiful cross who found the back of the net. Less than a minute later, the Scots got on the board again as Fitzsimmons found sophomore Britini Patrick (North Muskegon/North Muskegon) on a break away who finished to give the Scots the 2-0 lead heading into the half.
Adrian came out and scored their only goal of the game in the 62nd minute, but the Scots kept the pressure on all game and battled back with a goal of their own in the 68th minute as Sarah Merrit (Lake Orion/Lake Orion) beat the goalie with a one timer off a dual assist from Swan and Fitzsimmons.
In the 80th minute, the Scots put the icing on top as Swan went to work beating three Bulldog' defenders off the dribble and rocketing a shot into the side net to give the Scots the 4-1 lead and to finish off the scoring in the game.
"Our athletes played well today and they played very hard. I am very proud of the way they responded in their first road conference game and their first game on turf. It was a good win for our program," commented Head Coach Jeff Hosler on the win.
Sophomore Katie Weiksel (Northville/Northville) played all ninety minutes in the game and recorded five saves. The Scots out shot the Bulldogs 13 to five on the way to the win.
Alma travels to Holland on Wednesday to take on Hope College in a big MIAA match up. The game is scheduled to start at 4:30 p.m.
