Scots Notch First Win of 2006

TIFFIN, Ohio - Alma College women's soccer head coach Jeff Hosler could hardly contain the excitement after his team was rewarded with its first win of the 2006 season, giving first year year coach Hosler his first win at the helm of a collegiate soccer program with a 4-0 victory against Heidelberg Wednedsay (Sept. 6) evening in Tiffin, Ohio. Alma improves to 1-2 on the season.

"The team came through with exactly what I knew they could do. They responded to the challenge after last weekend. We were more offensive-minded, more aggressive and more creative," said Hosler.

Tara Fitzsimmons (Marshall) scored the first goal for the Scots with under two minutes remaining in the first half on an Alison Mulvaney (Mason/Okemos) assist. The goal came off a direct free kick about 35 yards out. The goal came after three different rain delays. The teams played 12 minutes, sat through a 30 minute rain delay, played two more minutes and sat for another rain delay and went to take the field and were called off again for yet another - but final - rain delay. The Scots would play the second half rain-delay-free.

Fitzsimmons emerged to score 10 minutes into the second half off a Britney Patrick (North Muskegon) assist when Patrick beat the defender on the wing and Fitzsimmons converted on the header.

Just over two minutes later, Patrick scored a goal of her own with the assist coming this time from Kelly Walsh (Linden/Fenton). Patrick - on the wing - beat her defender and Walsh fed the ball back to her as Patrick capitalized on a one-on-one option to put the Scots ahead 3-0.

Rounding out scoring for the Scots, Kim Hoeltzel (Clawson) scored with the assist coming from Elizabeth Daley (Lum/Lapeer East).

"Kim played phenomenal and aggressive," noted Hosler. "She was always where we needed her and maintained possession throughout the contest."

The Scots return to action when they host Rowan (N.J.) and LaRoche (Pa.) on Sept. 9 and 10, respectively, at Scotland Yard.
