Scots Force Dutch to Double Overtime

ALMA, Mich. - The Alma College women's soccer team lost 2-1 to Hope Tuesday at Scotland Yard in a double overtime thriller. With the loss, Alma falls to 4-10-1, 3-9-0 in MIAA play while Hope improves to 13-2, 10-1 in MIAA action.

Anchored by senior goalkeeper Pam McCarthy (Flushing/Powers Catholic) the Scots and Flying Dutch played to a scoreless tie through the first 45 minutes of the game. McCarthy had six saves int he first half alone and successfully defended five corners from the Orange and Blue.

Hope's first goal came in the 73rd minute when Kristine Krcmar found the back of the net to give the Dutch a 1-0 lead. But the Scots battled throughout the game and possessed the ball, effectively taking momentum. Rachel Comfort tied the game in the 81st minute after a penalty kick by Christina Harig.

It took the remaining nine minutes of regulation, 10 minutes of the first overtime and 1:07 in the second before Hope scored the game-winner when Krcmar dropped the ball past McCarthy to end the game at 2-1.

Chelsey Volant (Gaylord) launched three shots to lead the Scots, running the length of the field and securing the defense while constantly pressuring Hope's players at midfield. The Scots were out-shot 18-7 throughout the game, but it was of little matter as they were determined throughout the contest.

The Scots hit the road for a four-game course that has them travel to Albion, Olivet and Calvin within the conference with a non-conference game against Div. II Northwood set for Oct. 26.

The Maroon and Cream return home for their final game of the season against Adrian on Nov. 5.
