Alma Comes from Behind to Win First Game of Season in Overtime

Box Score

ALMA, Mich. - The Scots claimed their first win of the season in dramatic fashion at Scotland Yard. Alma played host to Illinois Institute of Technology to wrap up the three-game home stand to start off the season. The Scarlet Hawks took advantage of a slow start from the Scots in the form of Kenneth Barnabee scoring on a corner served in from Mateo Sanchez in the 21st minute. The Scots worked hard to find and equalizer but ended the half down 1-0.

Alma came out strong in the second half and found their equalizer just 6 minutes after the re-start. Sophomore Chase Karagitz played a beautiful cross field ball to First Year Ethan Swartzentruber. Swartzentruber brought the ball down in stride, danced around a defender and squared the ball for the on rushing Junior Keegan Hobson who tallied his first goal of the season. The Scots came close to completing the comeback multiple times. Chances from Junior Joe Rawlin, Swartzentruber, Sophomore Ethan Vollstedt and Senior Sandro Suffredini all went high. The Scarlet Hawks' Goalkeeper, Adam Falcigno, also played his part in keeping the Scots from finding the go-ahead goal in regulation.

Alma continued to poor on the pressure throughout overtime and found the breakthrough 5 minutes into the second overtime. Sophomore Ben Kirouac tracked down a loose ball in the Scarlet Hawks box and quickly sent a ball across the 6-yard box that Suffredini tucked away for the golden goal winner for the Scots.

The Scots were outshot 21 to 18 by the Scarlet Hawks. The Alma goalkeeper, Junior Chris Henry, made 10 saves to keep the Scots on terms throughout the game.

Coach Greer had this to say on the overtime win.
"We were not happy with our first half performance. We did not create enough going forward and lacked some edge in our play. I am proud of the way we responded and took ownership of our performances in the second half. We were much more dangerous and created some great opportunities. The team kept pushing and did what was needed to get the win. We have two good opponents ahead of us next weekend and need to make the most of this week's training to prepare for those battles."

The Scots are next in action down in Kentucky. The road trip kicks off on Friday with a Reserve game at Asbury University in Wilmore, KY 7:30pm. The First Team will then play Berry College (GA) on Saturday at 2:30pm and Transylvania University on Sunday at 3:30pm. Both games will be played at Transylvania University in Lexington, KY.
