Box Score KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Alma College men's lacrosse team won on the road for the second-straight game with a 10-9 victory over Kalamazoo College on Thursday. The Scots moved to 3-7 on the year. The game did not count towards the MIAA conference standings.
Senior Chase Hunyadi scored the game-winner with under five minutes to go. Connor Alley netted a season-high five goals in the game. Parker Macco made nine saves in net for Alma.
Alley got the scoring going in the first quarter to put the Scots in front 1-0. The Hornets would answer with three-straight scores. Alley added another first quarter goal late. The Scots would end up trailing 4-2 after the opening period.
The Scots would score the only two goals of the second quarter as the Alma defense kept Kalamazoo off the board. Trevor Bailey and Alley would each find the back of the net in the second to make it a 4-4 game at halftime.
Hunyadi put Alma back in front with a goal just over a minute into the second half. Alley then made it 6-4. After a Hornet goal, the Scots would go on a three-goal run with Bailey, Alley, and Ezra Leppanen all earning goals to make it 9-5 Alma. Kalamazoo would respond with four-straight scores to tie it up at 9-all with over six minutes left in the fourth and final quarter.
A little over minute later, Leppanen would send the ball in front to Hunyadi who had his back turned to the goalie. The Pepper Pike, Ohio native sent a turn-around shot over his shoulder that went right past the Hornet netminder who did not even see the ball coming before it hit the back of the net. The goal gave the Scots the lead again at 10-9.
The Hornets would send a couple late shots wide and eventually time ran out on Kalamazoo as the Scots held on for a one-goal victory.
Alley ended up with six points (5g, 1a). Bailey had two goals and three assists for a five-point game. Paul Heuschele led the team with four ground balls.
Connor Gilbert won seven faceoffs and Byron Weber won four faceoffs. Alma went 14-of-17 on its clear attempts.
Going forward, every regular season game for the Scots will count towards the conference standings. Alma continues its run of road games as it heads to Adrian College on Saturday, April 3rd for a 12 p.m. start time.
