Alma, Mich. – The Alma College men's lacrosse team (4-8, 0-1 MIAA) fell at home to the Hope College Flying Dutchman (7-3, 1-0 MIAA) on Wednesday night. 

Senior midfielder Jared Nycz (Buffalo, N.Y. / Iroquois) scored a game-high four goals in the contest. He also added an assist to lead the Scots with five points. 

Alma cut the lead to two with 11:47 remaining in the fourth quarter, but a run of three straight goals by Hope would put the game out of reach as the Scots suffered the loss in their conference opener. 

How It Happened 

• The Flying Dutchmen would strike first in the opening quarter but the Scots would soon respond with a man up goal by freshman attacker Timothy Gearig (Vicksburg, Mich. / Vicksburg). Nycz would tie the game at two with his first score of the game. 
• Hope would take a 6-2 lead in the second quarter but Nycz was able to use some great speed and skill to work his way around defenders for back-to-back goals before the end of the half. 
• Nycz continued his hot play into the start of the third quarter with his fourth goal just over two minutes in. Gearig tied the game at six each with a score assisted by junior attacker Chase Hunyadi (Pepper Pike, Ohio / University School). Hope responded with back-to-back scores to lead 8-6 heading to the fourth. 
• The margin would be extended to three early in the final quarter. Hunyadi was able to find junior attacker Connor Alley (Powell, Ohio / Worthington Kilbourne) who put it past the keeper to make it a two-goal game. 
• After Hope's three-goal run made it a five-score game with five minutes left the Scots were able to put up a run of back-to-back goals by juniors Trevor Bailey (Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. / Sault Area) and Janis Grigans (Lansing, Mich. / Lansing Catholic). Hope would score the final goal of the game with just over a minute remaining. 

Notables 

• Senior goalie Cameron Stelljes (Okemos, Mich. / Okemos) made 13 saves in the loss. He now has 431 career stops and is three away from breaking the program's all-time record. 
• The Scots caused 10 turnovers, tying a season-high. 
• Alma won the ground ball battle, 32-28.
