Warsaw, Ind. - The Alma College women's tennis team dropped a 5-4 decision to Franklin College (IN) on Saturday (Feb. 24) as the Scots opened a four-match spring break road trip.
Alma (1-4 overall) took points in two of the three doubles matches and two singles matches. Senior Amy Wood (Grand Rapids, Mich./City) was the Scots' lone winner in singles, posting a straight-set victory at No. 4 singles. The other match was won by forfeit.
The match came down to No. 5 singles, where sophomore Bernadette Garibay (Lansing, Mich./Grand Ledge) fell in a match tiebreaker after capturing the first set.
How It Happened
- Alma grabbed two of three points in doubles, thanks to a forfeit win at No. 3 doubles, followed by an 8-1 win at No. 2 doubles by the tea of Lucy McCarthy and Caroline Ross. The Scots almost recorded the sweep, but the No. 1 doubles team of Brooke Butterfield and Matilda Ennis fell in a tiebreaker.
- The Scots received another point with a forfeit at No. 6 singles, and Amy Wood posted a 6-2, 6-2 victory to give Alma its second singles point.
- Bernadette Garibay won her opening set at No. 5 singles, 6-1, but fell in the second set, 6-3. In the match tiebreaker, Franklin's Emily Seger outscored Garibay, 10-3.
Noteables
- Amy Wood is 4-0 this season and won her first match of the year at No. 4 singles. In addition, Wood's four wins this year marks a season-high.
