Men's lacrosse falls at Albion in MIAA title game

Albion, Mich. - The Alma College men's lacrosse team suffered an 11-8 defeat to Albion College in the championship game of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Tournament, marking the end of the Scots' season. Alma finishes the year with a 12-6 record, marking the second-most wins in the history of the program. 

Sophomore Jake Ellens (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac) the Scots with three goals as Alma mounted a furious fourth-quarter comeback that fell short. The game marked the third straight hat trick for Ellens, who scored 12 goals in his final three games of the season.

Junior Austen Irrer (Midland, Mich./Midland) and sophomore Jared Nycz (Elma, N.Y./Iriquois) both netted a pair of goals and registered an assist for three points each. Irrer collected his 100th career point during the outing to become the fifth player in program history to tally 100 points.

The two teams played tightly to each other throughout the first half, with Albion taking a 6-4 advantage into the break. After the teams traded goals to open the third quarter, the Britons reeled off four straight markers to gain a 10-5 advantage with 4:55 remaining in regulation.

The Scots attempted a comeback, scoring twice within a minute to cut the lead to four, then added a another marker with 1:52 to play. Junior Daniel Buchy (Springboro, Ohio/Springboro) and Ellens both scored man-up goals during the run, with Buchy netting his 100th career goal to establish the school record for career scoring.

Sophomore Cam Stelljes (Okemos, Mich./Okemos) made 12 saves on 23 shots as Albion outshot Alma for the game. Alec Palmer led the Britons with four goals.

The Scots graduate five seniors - TJ Miller (Brighton, Mich./Brighton), Josh Sejat (Grand Rapids, Mich./Northview), Mitch Adams (Novi, Mich./Novi), Jackson Williams (Zionsville, Ind./Zionsville) and David Smith (Royal Oak, Mich./Royal Oak) - from the program, which has participated in the last two MIAA Tournament title games.
