Box Score Looking for their first conference win of the season, the Alma College Men's Lacrosse team traveled to the Zollner Athletic Stadium to face off against Trine University (IN) on Wednesday. In an extremely close match, the Scots would leave Indiana with the 11-10 victory over the Thunder on the road.
With the win, Alma improves to 8-4 on the year and 1-1 in MIAA play. Trine drops to 2-7 overall and 0-3 in league action with the loss.
"It was a fantastic effort in an absolute battle of a game," said Alma Head Coach Michael Kinney. "Trine played with so much heart and battled back several times after being down 8-4. They really impressed me with their determination. Our guys played with so much passion and so much intensity, it was amazing to watch. We had a couple of miscues on defense, but all in all, it was a great effort by the Scots and we look forward to being back at home on Saturday.
"This season is all about our first senior class and we are working so hard to honor them and their commitment to building a foundation for our program."
So. MF/A Josh Sejat (Grand Rapids/Northview) would put the Scots on the board on Wednesday, scoring an unassisted goal to give Alma the 1-0 lead at 13:42.
Jr. MF/A Kyle Schnitzer (Aurora, CO/Smoky Hill) would follow with a score off an assist by Fr. A Quentin Ellis (Vernon, CT/Rockville) to extend the Scots lead to 2-0 with just under 11 minutes to play in the first quarter.
The home team would respond with two goals to knot the score at 2-2, before a man-down goal by Fr. D Austin Jordan (Naperville, IL/Nequa Valley) would put Alma up 3-2 after the first 15 minutes of action.
Following a Trine score to begin the second quarter, Ellis would collect his second assist of the game, this time finding Sr. MF Tyler Bennett (New Lothrop/New Lothrop), to put the Scots up 4-3 with just 11 minutes to play before halftime.
Ellis would then add a goal, before Bennett would net his second of the first half off an assist by So. MF/A TJ Miller (Brighton/Brighton) to give the visitors the 6-4 lead after the first 30 minutes.
The Scots continued to apply pressure at the start of the second half, scoring two-unanswered goals to stretch the lead to four,8-4, with 12:47 to play in the quarter.
The Thunder answered with three-straight goals to cut the defecit to 8-7 with just over nine minutes remaining in the third.
Fr. A Daniel Buchy (Springboro, OH/Springboro) would end the scoring streak with a goal off an assist by Jr. MF/A Marshall Argenta (Stafford, NY/Notre Dame) to bring the score to 9-7 at 4:41.
Trine ended the third with two-straight goals and after the first 45 minutes, the score was knotted at 9-9.
Less than two minutes in to the final quarter, Argenta would ring the bell to give Alma the lead back at 10-9.
The Thunder would knot the score at 10-10 with just over eight minutes remaining in regulation.
Jr. MF/A David Foster (Ann Arbor/Pioneer) would find the back of the net off an assist by Bennett to end the quarter and give Alma the hard-fought 11-10 victory on the road.
Bennett and Sejat both collected two goals on Wednesday, with Bennett adding an assist and a caused turnover. Ellis recorded a team-high two assists to go along with one goal. Jordan chipped in one goal and scooped up a team-best five groundballs.
Fr. MF Tanner Diment (Midland/Midland) won 10-of-22 faceoffs and added one goal in the win.
In net, Jr. GK Al Lesperance (Farmington/Farmington) improved to 6-5 on the year after making six saves on 16 shots.
Alma returns to action on Saturday, April 11, welcoming Olivet College to Bahlke Field for a game set to start at 1:00 p.m.
