Box Score On a chilly spring evening, the Alma College Men's Lacrosse team hosted Franciscan University of Steubenville (OH) under the lights at Bahlke Field. The Scots were dominant in the first night game of the season, jumping out to a 12-0 lead after the first half en route to defeating the Barons 16-3 to earn their sixth win of the season.
"Solid win tonight, said Alma Head Coach Michael Kinney. "Our young guys got lots of reps which helps them continue their development as we head toward the start of conference games next week."
"Our defense continues to deliver and our offense was clicking from the first quarter. I'm really proud of these guys for getting to six wins on the season and matching the previous number of wins in a single season."
"Now we have the opportunity to raise the bar higher as our program continues to mature, continued Kinney. "We hoped to be on a run toward a very tough conference schedule and we've met a lot of our non-conference goals this year."
It did not take Alma long to get on the board on Friday, as Jr. MF Marshall Argenta (Stafford, NY/Notre Dame) connected with Sr. MF Alex Novak (South Holland, IL/Marian Catholic) for a goal at 13:56 to put the Scots up 1-0.
In the next minute of action, Jr. MF Marshall Argenta (Stafford, NY/Notre Dame) would record two goals, one unassisted and one from Fr. MF Tanner Diment (Midland/Midland), to stretch the Alma lead to 3-0 with 12:55 remaining in the first quarter.
Fr. D Austin Irrer (Midland/Midland) would find the back of the net just 12 seconds later to extend the Scot advantage to 4-0 with 12:43 left to go in the first.
Argenta would collect his second assist of the game at 11:09, this time to Sr. MF Tyler Bennett (New Lothrop/New Lothrop), to put Alma up 5-0.
At 10:11, Diment would ring the bell to make it 6-0, before Jr. MF David Foster (Ann Arbor/Pioneer) would take Argenta's third helper to the house to put the Scots up 7-0 with nine minutes remaining in the first.
Alma ended the first half by bringing Sr. GK Daric Mueller (DeWitt/DeWitt) up the field where he would So. MF TJ Miller (Brighton/Brighton) for a score, giving the Scots the comfortable 8-0 lead after the first 15 minutes.
Jr. MF Kyle Schnitzer (Aurora, CO/Smoky Hill) kept the Scots rolling in the second quarter, scoring an unassisted goal at 13:14 to put Alma up 9-0.
At 11:53, Irrer would find a streaking Fr. A Bryce Bohrmann (Grand Rapids/Pennfield) in front of the net for a goal to extend the advantage to 10-0.
Fr. A Dan Buchy (Springboro, OH/Springboro) would put one on the board at the ten minute mark off an assist by Jr. A Stephan Salceda (Dousman, WI/St. John's NW Military Academy), before returning the favor to Salceda at 7:45 to give Alma the 12-0 lead at halftime.
Following a Franciscan goal at 9:52, So. A Josh Sejat (Grand Rapids/Northview) would take it himself for a goal, bringing the score to 13-1 with 8:37 left to play in the third.
The Barons would put one more goal on the board in the third, bringing the game to 13-2 heading in to the final quarter of play.
In the fourth, Miller would collect his second goal of the game off a Schnitzer assist, before Buchy would get his second score of the evening off a find by Irrer to put the Scots up 15-2 with just under five minutes remaining.
Franciscan would put its final goal of the game on the board at 3:17.
With the score 15-3, Buchy would complete the hat trick to seal the 16-3 victory for the Scots at home.
Buchy led the Scots with three goals, while Argenta and Miller each chipped in two. Argenta had a game-high three helpers, while Diment collected a team-best six ground balls.
In goal, Mueller improves to 1-0 on the year after grabbing five saves on eight shots in 60:00 minutes played.
The Scots led in nearly all statistical categories, including turnovers (32-18), faceoff wins (18-5) and groundballs (56-25).
Alma returns to action on Sunday, March 29, welcoming the Milwaukee School of Engineering to Bahlke Field for a game at 1:00 p.m.
