The Alma College Women's Tennis team celebrated the first day of Spring by welcoming the Cougars of Spring Arbor University to the Stone Recreation Center on Thursday evening. Despite major wins at first and third singles, the Scots were unable to continue the momentum and fell to the visitors 7-2.
With the loss, Alma drops to 2-6-3 overall while Spring Arbor improves to 10-7 with the victory.
"It was a tough loss but we had two huge wins from our leaders at the first and third singles spots," said Alma Head Coach Brittany Miller. "We are looking forward to starting conference play on Monday."
So. Megan Solano (Trenton/Trenton) kicked off the afternoon for the Scots with an impressive win at first singles, defeating her opponent 6-2, 6-2.
After dropping the first set 4-6, Sr. Lauren Moreau (Lansing/Lansing Catholic) bounced back to take set two 6-4 and force a super match tie-break. In a tense extra set, Moreau would manage to hold on and claim the 12-10 victory in position three.
Alma would drop the remaining three singles matches and carry a 4-2 deficit into the doubles portion of the afternoon.
The tandem of Solano and Jr. Morgan Waier (Grand Blanc/Grand Blanc) would force a tie-breaker at first position but ultimately lost 7-3 in the extra period.
The Scots would close out the doubles portion with 8-3 and 8-2 defeats to give the visiting Cougars the 7-2 victory on Thursday.
Alma begins conference play on Monday, March 24, traveling to take on Trine University (IN) in a match set for 4:00 p.m.
