The Alma College Football team traveled down to Illinois on Saturday to take on host Rockford College and came away with a 37-17 road victory against the Regents. The win improved the Scots to 1-2 on the season, while Rockford fell to 0-3 this season.
The Regents struck first with a 37 yard field goal and a 90 yard interception return at the 9:41 and 7:31 marks of the first quarter, bringing the score to 10-0. The Scots would not be discouraged, though, as the remainder of the game was all Alma. They struck back nine minutes later when Jr. Ed Mason (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Creston) scored the first touchdown of the day for the Scots, making the score 10-6.
In the second quarter, Alma took the lead when Mason scored yet another touchdown with 1:39 remaining in the half. Jr. Aaron Hahn' (St Louis/St Louis) rushed for a successful two-point conversion, giving the Scots a 14-10 lead going into halftime.
The Alma defense came out of the locker room with guns blazing, holding Rockford to a mere two yard gain in their first drive of the second half and earning a safety on the second Regents' possession. With the score reading 16-10, the Scotgun took the field and 1:52 later, So. Jarrett Leister (St. Louis/Mt. Pleasant) completed a 30 yard pass to teammate Sr. Barak Henderson (Hot Springs, AR.Oscoda) for a touchdown.

The Scots' defense disallowed any further Rockford scoring chances in the third quarter and headed into the last 15 minutes of the game with a healthy 23-10 lead. Leister was able to connect with Henderson again, completing a 45 yard touchdown pass early in the fourth, increasing the lead to 30-10. The Regents' last offensive attempt of the game came with 11:49 remaining when they scored a touchdown in an effort to catch the Scots, but they were unsuccessful, as Leister scored another touchdown for Alma on a 15 yard run, making the final score 37-17.
Alma completed 607 total offensive yards, with 341 yards rushing on the day. Mason rushed for 228 of those yards, setting the Alma College record for most yards rushing in a game. Mason had two touchdowns. Henderson ended the day with two touchdowns as well totaling 105 yards receiving. Leister completed 16 of 29 passing attempts for 185 yards.
Defensively for the Scots, Sr. Anthony Sabatella (St. Clair Shores/Warren De La Salle) continued his excellent season with a total of 10 tackles followed by Sr. Conrad Bovee (Ithaca/Ithaca), who had nine. Sr. Scotty Cole (Alma/Alma)also contributed 6 tackles on the defensive side of the ball.
The Scots compete next Saturday when they travel to Lexington, Virginia to take on Washington and Lee University beginning at 1 p.m.
